Man charged with assault after leaving person in critical condition

Ottawa police laid charges in connection to an incident that happened early Wednesday morning near the city’s downtown area.

There was a significant officer presence on Nepean Street between Bank and Kent streets for several hours on Jan. 15.

Paramedics told CityNews that they were called to the area around 4:30 a.m. where an adult male sustained serious injuries from a “blunt object.” He was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he remains, but his injuries are not life-threatening, a spokesperson said.

Officials found the suspect a short time later.

Melquis Rivera, 60, of Ottawa is charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. He appeared in court yesterday afternoon.
