The Ottawa Fire Services were sent to a blaze around 5:48 a.m. this morning, after receiving a call from a neighbour describing black smoke in the windows and flames emerging from a building.
The blaze took place in a single-family home in the 0-100 block of Park Avenue, between Cartier and Elgin streets. This marks the second fire in Ottawa since last night.
Ottawa fire arrived on scene three minutes following dispatch and reported flames emerging from the windows, wrote Ottawa Fire Services in a news release. Crews declared the scene a “working fire” and additional resources were dispatched, they noted.
According to Ottawa Fire Services, the home was under renovations and unoccupied at the time of the fire.
Firefighters were able to pull down ceilings and open walls, in efforts to extinguish flames that were burning through walls and ceilings of the home. As a result of the incident, a firefighter was injured after falling halfway through a hole in the floor that was present due to renovations, Ottawa fire said.
The firefighter was sent to the hospital by paramedics and has since been released.
Following two full searches of the structure, there were no occupants inside the structure.
The blaze was declared until control at 6:23 a.m., and an investigator remains on scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
