Two Ottawa men charged after posing as bank fraud investigators

Two people are facing several charges in a fraud case that saw the accused pose as bank investigators.

Ottawa police have been looking into a number of incidents of people pretending to be bank fraud investigators. The suspects often call from fake phone numbers or use call display titles of financial institutions. Once they gain the victim’s trust, they trick them into believing their bank accounts have been hacked.

After gaining information like pins and passwords, the suspects instruct the victims to leave their cards out for a “courier” to retrieve. When the fraudster gets the card they withdraw cash and make as many purchases as possible before the victims catch on.

This scam led police to arrest a 24-year-old and a 19-year-old, both from Ottawa. They are facing offences such as:
