Four Ottawa eateries on Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list

There are four restaurants that are on a top list of places to eat across the country.

According to Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants, a publication dedicated to ranking, over 160 experts from across the country listed Ottawa as home of some of Canada’s best places to eat this year.

“If you look at the restaurants that are still in the top 10, there are some that just do such a fantastic job year after year that they stay relevant and everybody keeps voting for them,” Jacob Richler, editor and publisher of Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants, told CityNews in an interview. “Judges, like everyone else, are attracted by shiny new things.”

The first Ottawa restaurant on the list is Atelier at spot 41. This upscale “modern Canadian cuisine” provides a 40-course tasting menu, the only offer, that lasts around three hours.

“We’re excited to share that Atelier will soon be unveiling a new menu format,” the restaurant says on its website. “While we’re not quite ready to share the details just yet, we can promise that something truly special is on the horizon.”

The last day for the 40-course tasting menu will be May 31.

Also in the top 50 on the list is Arlo, in the city’s Centretown neighbourhood. Headed by Chef Jamie Stunt, the menu features “vast natural wine” options and “seasonal inspired dishes.”

The eatery moved up more than 20 spots from last year’s list.

“Some cities go up and down a little, (on the list) not because the quality of their dining has gone down, but just because the main restaurants that people are dining at are getting a little older and there’s not new activity on the scene,” Richler said.

Coming in at 88, Riviera on Sparks Street has a multitude of hosting options. With a dining area, banker’s office, cellar vault or the option for people to book out the whole restaurant.

“All come for the gorgeous big-city setting in which to celebrate, indulge in classic dishes and enjoy some of Ottawa’s best cocktails,” the website reads.

In the Centretown West community, Perch Restaurant ranked 95th on the list of the country’s best eateries.

It is described as an “intimate” dining experience that focuses on ingredients in Canada. It has “a commitment to ethical farming practices and sustainability.”

It’s owned and headed by Justin Champagne, who grew up in the industry. The restaurant first opened in 2021.

“Guests can watch as the chef and his team prepare the plates of our nine course tasting menu, and then be served by those same hands. Our goal is to offer a unique experience to all who come to dine with us,” Perch said on its website.

At the top of the list, is a more secluded eatery, in Jordan Station, Ont., near Niagara Falls.

Pearl Morissette is an “ambitious fine dining experience” the restaurant says on its website, that changes the menu often and focuses on regional ingredients.

Rounding out the top three is Mon Lapin in Montreal and Alo in Toronto.
