‘HOTtawa’ no more; cooler temperatures grace race weekend

Those lacing up for Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend can expect cooler temperatures this year, making for optimal running conditions.

One of Ontario’s latest major spring marathons, Ottawa Race Weekend, is often characterized by its sunny and scorching conditions, adding an additional challenge to the already physical feat. Many runners colloquially refer to it as “HOTtawa.”

The 2024 race weekend took place in the middle of a heat wave, with warnings that the weather could reach 30 C. While Environment Canada data for Ottawa International Airport clocked a high of near 22 C on Sunday May 26 during the half and full marathon, high humidity increased the risk of dehydration and blazing sun made it feel much warmer.

“If it is hot, it is not the day to try for a PB. Try to relax and enjoy the race,” the race’s Medical Director wrote prior to the 2024 race.

This year’s race could prove as redemption for those who played it safe and slowed down last year. Temperatures for Sunday are expected to reach a high of 18 C with a mix of sun and cloud and a slight chance of rain, making for much more suitable conditions to tackle 21.2km or even the full 42.2km.

Those racing middle distances on Saturday can expect even cooler temperatures with a high of 13 C.

Connor Noad, who is toeing the line Sunday, told CityNews he is relieved for cooler temperatures.

“Typically, this is called ‘HOTtawa’ race weekend because of the extremely warm temperatures, but it looks like we’ll be blessed with cooler temperatures than normal,” he said. “It’s also looking like the sun will make an appearance for the first time this week, so it should be a great day for runners and spectators alike!”

Ottawa Race Weekend is known for some of the best crowds as they cheer thousands of runners around the historic landmarks of the city. That support is what Anna Versluis, who will be running her first full marathon in Ottawa, said she is driven by.

“I think I’m most looking forward to the crowds and how much the city turns out for this race,” she said. “I’ve heard really awesome things about how many people turn out to watch and I think it’s gonna be what gets me through the pain cave.”
