Truck’s roof ripped off after striking overpass on highway

A commercial motor vehicle struck an overpass on Wednesday, causing damage to the truck.

It happened in the Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal on Highway 401 as the truck drove under the County Road 22 bridge.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say only the corners of the truck’s roof made contact.

Officials say there is no significant damage to the bridge, but the impact “peeled the roof right off of the truck.”

The driver of the truck was charged due to the over-height vehicle. CityNews is unaware if there are any injuries.

OPP say drivers and operators can be responsible for charges related to commercial vehicles.

They suggest that while the driver is responsible for how the vehicle is driven, operators are accountable for permitting the driver and vehicle can be on the road. That includes completing inspections and having proper licenses.

Police are using this incident to remind drivers to double check the dimensions of their vehicles.
