3-alarm fire in Glebe damages multiple residences

Multiple residences suffered severe damage after a serious fire Saturday night in the Glebe District.

Ottawa Fire Services said it received multiple 911 calls shortly after 10:30 p.m. on the night of July 5, reporting that there was a “big fire” in the 100 block of Fourth Avenue.

Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed there was a roof on fire at the back of a single-family home. Multiple homes had proceeded to catch fire.

“Firefighters arrived on scene within two minutes of dispatch and found several residents safely evacuated and gathered on the sidewalks,” OFS said in a post on X. “The initial Officer in Command quickly assessed the scene and discovered four large semi-detached homes, a large tree, a garage with a vehicle, and multiple decks on fire.”

A working fire was declared at 10:40 p.m. to dispatch additional resources to the scene. By 10:42 p.m., the situation had progressed to a three-alarm fire.

No occupants were found in any of the homes.

OFS says firefighters had to deal with additional hazards on scene which included live hydro wires.

The blaze was declared under control at 11:09 p.m.

Victim Services was dispatched to the scene for eight adults and two children displaced by the fire. A “fire watch” has been set up to monitor for flare-ups.

An Ottawa Fire Services Investigator continues to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

Lyon Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue was closed overnight for the investigation but reopened Sunday afternoon.
