Ottawa K9 unit used to track down fleeing driver

Police attempted to stop and charge a person in Ottawa, but instead the driver sped away at a high rate of speed.

The scene happened on July 4 at around 6:00 p.m. Officers tried to stop the driver for a Highway Traffic Act violation, but they instead fled. Out of an abundance of caution, police did not follow the vehicle.

According to a press release, a short time after this, a vehicle was found with a flat tire on Kichi Zībī Mīkan Parkway. Officers saw a driver running away on a nearby bike path and they chased them. A witness to this reported seeing the driver run into tall grass before returning to the path.

This was when the force’s K9 unit was called in. They helped find the man, his personal belongings and a quantity of drugs.

As a result, Saleh Ghrebi, 25, is facing charges of:

  • Possessing property obtained by crime (under $5,000)
  • Operating a vehicle while prohibited (twice)
  • Dangerous driving
  • Failing to stop for police
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Driving a vehicle with an obstructed view (due to tinted or coated windows)

Police said he remains in custody on July 11, pending a court appearance.
