Here’s what’s open and closed this Colonel By Day

Another summer-long weekend is just around the corner, and the weather forecast for the nation’s capital could not be sunnier.
Environment Canada is showing that there will be no shortage of sunny, clear and hot weather this Colonel By Day long weekend. Kicking off Friday, the humidex will make it feel more like 30.
Saturday and Sunday both have temperatures in the high 20s and no sign of rain. Monday is the only day with a mix of sun and cloud but a high of 29 C is expected.
The holiday is a way for the nation’s capital to remember Lieutenant Colonel John By, who supervised the construction of Ottawa’s Rideau Canal and founded Bytown, Heritage Ottawa notes on its website.
Monday, August 4 is not a statutory holiday, meaning many retail stores are open and it’s business as usual in Quebec; however, City of Ottawa services are affected.
Shopping
- Rideau Centre: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Bayshore: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- St. Laurent: 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Billings Bridge: 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Place d’Orleans: 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Carlingwood: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- The ByWard Market is open.
- Most grocery stores are open.
- Shoppers Drug Mart locations are open.
LCBO and Beer Stores
Select The Beer Store locations will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some LCBO outlets will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. People are encouraged to call ahead to make sure.
OC Transpo buses and trains
People can take advantage of the 2-for-1 Day Pass for anyone older than 11 years can ride all day for $12.
- OC Transpo bus service will run on a Saturday schedule, with enhanced service on routes 8, 25, 63, and 74 during peak periods. Route 13 will operate with normal weekday schedule.
- O-Train Line 1 will run on a reduced weekday schedule from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m.
- O-Train Lines 2 and 4 will run a normal weekday schedule from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m.
- Rural Shopper Route 301 will run.
- Para Transpo bookings or recurring trips for Monday, August 4 are automatically cancelled
Green bin, recycling and garbage
There will be no curbside green bin, recycling, garbage or bulky item collection on Monday. Pick-up will take place the next day.
The collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.
The Trail Waste Facility Landfill will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Recreation and cultural services
- Most recreation complexes are open and operating on a modified schedule.
- Beaches and outdoor pools will be open with lifeguards on duty. Splash pads and wading pools will be open
- Arts Court, Nepean Creative Arts Centre, Nepean Visual Arts Centre, City-operated museums, Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe, Ben Franklin Place, and Shenkman Arts Centre will be closed to the public
- All libraries will be closed
- All municipally run child care centre are closed
