‘Unique’ project on Sparks Street has city looking for artists

The City of Ottawa is looking for street artists for an upcoming art project set to appear along the pavement of Sparks Street.

In a press release, the municipality said it is looking for artists’ time, patriotism and talent. The “unique” project is in partnership with the Downtown BIA, which is reaching out across Canada for professional artists to paint a series of 13 pavement artworks.

Art will go onto a concrete strip that’s two metres by 5.8 metres. between Kent and Lyon streets. They are supposed to represent Canada’s 10 provinces and three territories.

The Canadiana Block is supposed to be finished and unveiled in time for Canada Day celebrations in 2026.

It’s a part of the Centretown Street Safety and Revitalization Action Plan, the release explains.

“The plan aims to beautify and elevate the downtown experience for workers, residents, visitors and businesses through a variety of initiatives, including public art,” it reads.

Sparks Street, a focal point for its walkability and businesses that line the walls, was chosen for its proximity to Parliament Hill.
