Traffic impacts expected on portion of Richmond Road for LRT expansion

Construction workers will be blocking lanes on Richmond Road over the next several days in preparation for the Ottawa light rail transit (LRT) expansion.

According to a notice from the City of Ottawa, motorists should expect traffic travelling north and south on Richmond Road near Highway 417 overnight Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Workers will be removing temporary concrete barriers and painting lines. There will be a southbound lane reduction from Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

That night, the northbound lane on Richmond Road and on-ramp to the 417 eastbound will be closed from 11:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. on Thursday.

There are several detours available for drivers who are impacted by the reductions and closures.

Another portion of Richmond Road closed last year in anticipation of the Stage 2 LRT construction. The city blocked off two kilometres of the roadway near Byron Avenue to reconfigure it for the O-Train. It’s set to be closed until 2027.

Latest update on O-Train west expansion

In June, the city updated the public and members of council on Stage 2 of the O-Train extensions. The transit committee heard that final construction and train testing was taking place in the east.

In the west, construction of stations, guideway, track and roadway continued. Track work was complete, the update notes with overhead wires being installed across the line.

When complete, the west extension will have 15 more kilometres of rail and 11 new stations. It will link Tunney’s Pasture to Algonquin, and bring on Line 3 that will link Trim to Moodie.
