Impaired driving charges jump in fourth week of Festive RIDE program

With work holiday parties in full swing and family gatherings getting underway, OPP continue to crack down on impaired driving across eastern Ontario.

In the fourth week of the Festive RIDE program, officers laid 34 impaired driving charges, almost double the 18 from the week prior. This brings the total number of charges thus far in the campaign to 101.

An additional 20 drivers faced three-day license suspensions for registering a warn on a roadside screening device. This was up from 15 the previous week.

The Festive RIDE campaign began on Nov. 20 and will continue into the new year. Police say ride checks can happen anywhere at any time.

Beyond RIDE checks, several drivers were charged with impaired driving in the Upper Ottawa Valley throughout the week.

Three separate impaired driving charges were laid in the Valley on Dec. 14, one in relation to a crash and another with a driver caught speeding.

Two additional drivers faced impaired driving charges on Dec. 16.

An impaired driving charge brings with it a 30-day licence suspension and seven day vehicle impoundment.
