Driver injured in crash after removing air bag

A driver suffered minor injuries in a crash after removing the airbag equipped steering wheel in his car.

Ottawa OPP received a report of the collision on Highway 417 near Vanier around 6 a.m. Monday.

The steering wheel that was equipped with an airbag had been removed and was replaced with an aftermarket one.

Police say the driver also was not wearing a seatbelt and during the collision his head struck the wooden steering wheel.

According to OPP, it is illegal to remove air bags from your vehicle.

A conviction for failure to wear a seatbelt dons a fine between $200 and $1,000 and two demerit points.
