Motorcyclist caught going almost 200 km/h on highway

A 23-year-old driver is facing a criminal charge after provincial police caught a motorcycle going well above the speed limit on Highway 417.

Officials said in a post on Saturday that the driver was on the highway and had an M2 licence. The officer clocked the rider going 193 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. The young driver had his licence suspended for 30 days and the bike impounded for two weeks. He’s set to appear in an Ottawa court at a later date.

On top of the offences, he faces a criminal charge for dangerous operation, something police can lay if a driver is caught going over a certain limit.

Following an undercover provincial police blitz that saw dozens of charges laid and several motorcycles seized, the Crown in Ottawa and police reached an agreement in September 2025.

In consultation, the two agreed that any speeds over 180 km/h, officers can lay a dangerous driving charge. This is one tactic police are trying in order to curb the number of high-profile speeding incidents in the nation’s capital.
