Firefighters remove trapped person from vehicle after east end crash

Crews were called to the intersection of Montreal Road and St. Laurent Boulevard for a collision where a passenger was trapped early Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called by Ottawa police, who said there was a person trapped inside the crushed vehicle around 1:24 a.m. Officials arrived within four minutes and found a vehicle with “heavy front-end damage.”

It was facing westbound in the eastbound lanes of Montreal Road. The driver was out and not injured, but the passenger was stuck inside, firefighters reported.

Stabilizing the vehicle using cribbing and disconnecting the battery, before extrication process could begin. One firefighter needed to go into the vehicle to give the person first aid while also stabilizing their spine as they were being removed.

Using specialized tools, the teams removed both passenger-side doors and a post between one of the front doors.

The passenger was removed by 1:42 a.m. and was sent to hospital in an ambulance.

Before leaving, firefighters spread absorbent on the leaking fluids before Ottawa police took over.
