OTTAWA – There could soon be a limit on how long ghost bikes can stay in place.
A new city report recommends the memorials be taken down after 90 days, citing concerns the roadside memorials could be visual distractions. If you wanted something more lasting, you could pay the city to design, install and maintain a permanent memorial.
The bikes, which are usually spray painted white, serve to honour the memory of cyclists killed in traffic on Ottawa streets.
City staff surveyed 20 other Canadian municipalities, and found seven had a policy surrounding ghost memorials, while the other 13 had no specific policy.
The reports goes to the Transportation Committee on Wednesday.
