The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) says it has charged Shane Sabourin with first degree murder in connection with an assault at a motel in Carleton Place.

On Wednesday around 4:00 a.m., the OPP were called to a motel on Highway 7, where they located a male with serious injuries.

The man was transported to hospital where he later died. The victim has been identified as Patrick Robert Lynch, 57, of Mississippi Mills.

Police issued an emergency alert around 11:30 a.m. to notify the public about Sabourin, who was considered armed and dangerous.

Shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, the OPP say they arrested the accused at a home in Carleton Place.

Sabourin remains in custody and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Perth, Thursday.

The investigation is ongoing and police are advising area residents that there is no longer a public safety concern.
