This Ottawa neighbourhood is full of cat lovers, a national ranking shows

When it comes to Canadian’s favourite pets, cats are the big dog in the race.

According to PetSmart Canada, cat adoptions have outpaced dog adoptions in this country for the past several years.

To celebrate the launch of PetSmart Charities of Canada National Adoption Week, the company has released a list of Canada’s Top 10 cat-loving cities, and one Ottawa community made it into the top five.

Nepean ranked fourth while Cambridge, Ont. slid into third, while East York, Ont. claimed second. Langley, B.C., came in first.

In a press release, president of PetSmart Charities of Canada, Amiee Gilbreath, said cats are having a moment.

“This index shows us that cat parenting is more universal than you might think, and those old stereotypes no longer apply. More people than ever are enjoying the playful nature of cat companionship,” she said. “Cats can thrive in smaller living spaces, and their independence often makes them incredibly appealing to pet parents who can’t get out for regular walks.”

The list takes into consideration which communities had the highest number of adoptions while also spending more on cat toys, treats and other products.

“We encourage all Canadians to consider adding a new feline family member during PetSmart Charities of Canada National Adoption Week, July 21-27 at PetSmart stores,” added Gilbreath.

PetSmart locations across the country will be hosting adoption events with local animal welfare organizations to help felines find their purr-fect match.

The press release says that the summer months are when most cats have kittens, which creates an urgent need at shelters to find permanent homes for many kittens that are surrendered.
