Ottawa and much of south and southeastern Ontario can expect poor air quality this weekend as wildfire smoke returns, Environment Canada says.
The special air quality statement was issued shortly before 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
At 1 p.m., the Air Quality Health Index was rated as a four, which is classified as moderate risk. By late afternoon, that number is expected to reach seven.
“Smoke from forest fires is expected to continue to spread south into southern Ontario this afternoon and evening,” the statement from Environment Canada reads. “The wildfire smoke may persist for much of the weekend for parts of southern Ontario.”
“As smoke levels increase, health risks increase. Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.”
The statement comes at an inconvenient time as triathletes gear up to take part in Ottawa’s first ever IRONMAN Sunday. Athletes or anyone spending an extended period of time outdoors are cautioned to monitor for symptoms including coughing, wheezing, and nose and throat iritation.
“People more likely to be impacted by outdoor air pollution, including people aged 65 and older, pregnant people, infants and young children, people with an existing illness or chronic health condition, and people who work outdoors, should reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms,” Environment Canada says.
The special air quality statement is expected to last throughout the day Sunday.
