Tim Tierney calls FCM presidential position ‘huge deal’ for Ottawa

Coun. Tim Tierney of Beacon Hill-Cyrville makes history as Ottawa’s first Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) president in 84 years.
Tierney said he plans to leverage his location and new title in advocating for the needs of municipalities across the country.
“I’m literally five blocks from Parliament Hill,” said Tierney. “I have the distinct privilege to be able to just walk up there and chat with people on a regular basis — something I fully intend on doing.”
The FCM advocates for more than 2,000 municipalities across Canada. Tierney said that after attending his first FCM meeting 15 years ago, he knew it was something he had to get involved with — and over his time within the FCM, he says its impact is undeniable.
A release from Tierney’s team said his presidency puts Ottawa at a unique advantage within the FCM at an important time for Canada.
“It’s an interesting time in history,” explained Tierney. “We have trade and tariff tensions; we have a real focus on Canadian unity.”
Tierney named infrastructure as his top priority for municipalities, what he deems the “non-glamorous” issues like underground sewage. He said Ottawa’s needs are similar to that of other municipalities and hopes to secure greater infrastructure funding.
“If I don’t actually have ministers or MPs whispering in the hall going, ‘Oh God, here comes Tim again,’ I haven’t done my job,” said Tierney. He said he plans to be very hands-on with the support of his FCM team.
Tierney will serve as president of FCM for a one-year term.
