Protesters demand return of long gun registry

A memorial service was held on Parliament Hill Tuesday morning to remember the victims of the mass shooting at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique.
Tuesday is the 22nd anniversary of the massacre. It’s also the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Wearing green scarves and holding signs, around 350 women and men honoured the victims by laying roses on the front steps of Centre Block.
But the ceremony was more like a protest against the Harper Government.
The crowd chanted slogans as they arrived with signs saying “save the Gun Registry” and “women’s rights are human rights.”
Suzanne Laplante-Edward, struggled to hold back tears as she spoke about the loss of her daughter Anne-Marie.
“When it happens so violently, so violently, so unjustly, and so needlessly, there is little relief from the never-ending pain in our hearts,” she said.”
Laplante-Edward said eliminating the Long Gun Registry is like a slap in the face.
“She would have turned 43 on October 25th, the very day that the Conservatives chose to table Bill C19 at the House of Commons,” said Laplante-Edward.
Passions took over as people cried out shame over the government’s plan to eliminate the Long Gun Registry.
They want Conservatives to change their minds saying it’s a monument to the victims in Montreal, and it saves 400 lives per year.
