Gregson Trial continues with testimony from ex-wife, detective and carjack victims

OTTAWA – In a fifth day of testimony by witnesses for the prosecution court learned more details about how Kevin Gregson spent the hours leading up to the morning when he stabbed Const. Eric Czapnik.
Gregson is pleading not guilty to one count each of robbery and first degree murder but an agreed statement of facts states that Gregson stabbed Czapnik and neither the Crown nor the defense disputes that fact. The crown will have to prove that Gregson carjacked a silver Honda Civic from two teenagers.
On Monday, Gregson’s ex-wife, the two carjacking victims and a forensic detective took the stand as the Crown continued to build its case against Gregson.
One of Gregson’s ex-wives gave her evidence Monday, detailing a confrontation she had with Gregson at 5:30 December 28, 2009, the night before Czapnik was stabbed. Her name cannot be released because of a publication ban.
She told court she raised serious allegations of rape against Czapnik, saying the 10-year-old victim had told her herself. She said Gregson’s only response was, “I’m done. The RCMP will jump on this regardless of the truth.”
Throughout the exchange his ex-wife said Gregson remained calm, which is normal for him.
By 6:17 someone was using his computer to search “Suicide” on Wikipedia and to research the methods. The user also searched military news, videos and job postings, according to Ottawa Police Detective Andrew Thompson. He did the forensic analysis of the two computers recovered from Gregson’s home with a search warrant and said he identified the laptop as Gregson’s based on emails and documents on the laptop. It was from this computer that the searches were done.
Later in the evening Gregson left his home, allegedly carjacking a silver Honda from two teenagers. Ben Stenzler and Kaili Trenholme gave their evidence Monday. The pair had decided to meet up for coffee at a Tim Horton’s in Greenbank Square, directly across the road from a police station.
Stenzler was sitting in his mother’s car when the driver’s side door opened and a man pointed a gun in his face telling him, “this is a carjacking,” and to get out.
“I froze until Kaili told me to get out and that’s what we did,” said Stenzler, who was 17 at the time.
Trenholme said she had to unbuckle Stenzler’s seat belt for him and heard the man who stole the car say, “thanks guys, shut the door.” But she didn’t, not right away. She asked him if she could get her Lady GaGa CD out of the drive, it had been a Christmas present. She was told no, and then closed the door, went in to the Tim Horton’s and called 911.
Stenzler later identified the stolen Silver Honda as the one shown in crime scene photos now familiar in court saying, “yep that’s my mom’s car.”
Gregson allegedly stole it and drove it to the Civic Campus where he stabbed Const. Eric Czapnik.
The trial resumes Tuesday morning when the lead investigator on the case takes the stand.
