‘Disturbing and disgusting:’ Ottawa mayor on recent attacks against local politicians

By Chris Kurys

Personal attacks against politicians in Ottawa have increased, with recent incidents against Canada's Infrastructure Minister Catherine McKenna, Nepean MPP Lisa MacLeod and City Councillor Laura Dudas, raising security concerns.

Ottawa's mayor called the incidents disturbing and disgusting on Friday, and said he too has experienced hateful displays from residents.

“Someone made a death threat, and then I had two others show up at the office that were somewhat threatening, but I didn't have any contact with them,” explained Jim Watson, adding that one time, someone showed up to his house and lingered around his property.

The mayor added that he's also been the victim of homophobic slurs.

“I've walked down the street a couple of times, I've had a couple of people roll down their window and yell 'faggot,'” said Watson, who came out as a gay man in 2019.

He says none of his personal experiences come close to the incidents that McKenna, MacLeod and Dudas are facing, but that none of these incidents are acceptable, as elected officials are doing their jobs.

“If you have a concern with them, send a letter, ask for a meeting, vote against them or run yourself, but don't go and intimidate.”
