Experts say Ottawa must change its housing plan to help meet provincial target

By CityNews Staff

As the provincial government works toward building 1.5 million homes over the next decade, Ottawa will need to change its official municipal plan if it's to help solve the housing crisis.

Dr. Mike Moffatt, senior director of Policy and Innovation at the Smart Prosperity Institute, told The Rob Snow Show with guest host Derick Fage on Tuesday, Aug. 16, that Ottawa's official plan is to build 7,500 units a year in the city, but this number should be closer to 10,000.

“So it's not quite a doubling, it's not quite the increase that we have in some parts of the province. But that's still a pretty big lift,” he said.

The Smart Prosperity Institute calculated that the 1.5 million provincial housing target would meet the province's housing needs. However, Moffatt said the challenging part will be doubling the number of homes built over the next decade.
