New Barrhaven downtown plan gets thumbs-up from planning committee

By Chris Kurys

Planning committee has approved a major refresh on a new concept for Barrhaven's new downtown core.

The town centre area, between Strandherd Drive and the Jock River, and west of Longfields Drive is currently home to many big-box stores and commercial properties.

The report states that there's hope that the new plan will make the district “A valued community asset, focal point and destination that resonated with the people of Barrhaven”.

Under the proposed plan, the space south of Chapman Mills Drive up to the Jock River would be predominantly residential, while the area north would be a mixed-use neighbourhood. A civic plaza has been suggested, with multifunctional uses, such as seasonal activities or community events.

The plan also proposes investing in infrastructure networks that can support future job growth in the area.

The plan will now go to City Council for approval next month.
