The Justice for Abdirahman Coalition is confirming that the family of Abdirahman Abdi is suing the Ottawa Police Services Board, Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau, constable Daniel Montsion and constable David Weir for more than $1.5-million.

A memorial is being held to mark the two-year anniversary of the death of Abdirahman Abdi at Somerset Square Park on Spadina Avenue at 7 p.m., Tuesday. Lawyer Lawrence Greenspon is representing the Abdi family in the lawsuit, and is expected to speak at the memorial.

Abdi was seriously injured in a confrontation with a police officer in Hintonburg on July 24, 2016.

He died in hospital the next day.

Montsion is facing charges of manslaughter, aggravated assault, and assault with a weapon in the case.

His trial is scheduled for February of 2019.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the interaction.
