Ottawa public school board ends police officer program

By Jason White

Ottawa's largest school board has voted to end its police officer program and issue a formal apology to any students harmed by the practice.

A motion to completely and immediately end the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board's engagement with the school resource officer program passed 10-1, Thursday night, after two evenings of debate at the board.

Trustees also voted to publish a formal apology to students harmed by the program on its website and in the media.

As part of the motion, trustees will take anti-racism and decolonization training and the board will also seek out community groups that help marginalized people and consult with them to find a way to improve student services for youth in crisis.
