Pack smartly to avoid delays at the airport this holiday season

Don't wait until the last minute to pack for your flight this holiday season.

That's the message from the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, as it encourages people to take their time and pack smartly, in order to avoid delays in an already busier-than-usual environment.

Spokesperson Christine Langois said most people know not to put full sized shampoo and drinks in their carry on, but there are some other items which are not allowed which may be a surprise.

“Peanut butter would be considered a liquid because it's spreadable. Solid food can be carried on — you can bring your turkey if you want,” she explained. “However, the cranberry sauce is considered a liquid because it's like jam or something, so it would have to go in checked luggage.”

Carry on luggage has become the norm as people try to avoid paying fees, but not everything can go across security.

Langois has seen some strange items.

“Just recently, here in Ottawa, we saw a pool cue, for example. It's pointy, it's very long, it could become a projectile, so as our first priority is the safety of the travelling public, we want to make sure that does not go into a carry-on.”

Langois said other people have tried to bring on scissors, pocket knives and even snow globes.
