Renfrew hospital urging residents to avoid using emergency department for COVID-19 testing

Before going to the emergency room to get tested for COVID-19, the Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) is asking residents to avoid using the hospital for such testing if they are not symptomatic.
In an announcement on its Facebook page on Sunday, December 26, the hospital said that people who aren’t showing symptoms, those who want to be tested for travel reasons or for assurance over the holidays, should instead book with an assessment centre.
“As the COVID-19 Omicron variant continues to expand its reach around the world and right here at home, demand is growing for PCR tests. As a result, individuals may experience longer waits for appointments at assessment centres,” RVH said. “This has led to more people seeking to have the PCR test performed in our local emergency departments.”
The hospital said it must continue to preserve its emergency department resources for emergency situations.
It also added that it is not able to provide PCR testing to the general public. And, if anyone has any symptoms consistent with COVID-19, at this time, should remain at home and follow the current public health guidelines.
“An influx of individuals coming into the ED who have no symptoms, but want to be tested for COVID-19 clogs the clinical pathways and stretches resources needed for patients who are true emergencies,” Dr. Kristian Davis, medical director of the emergency department at RVH, said.
Those who are experiencing COVID-like symptoms should call Renfrew County VTAC at 1-844-727-6404 to make a test appointment, or check the list of participating pharmacies at ontario.ca.
Anyone experiencing an emergency or urgent conditions, such as heart attack, stroke or severe injury, is encouraged to visit the emergency department or dial 911.
