Right-wing groups protest UN compact on migration at Parliament Hill

The Parliamentary Protective Service says it arrested nine people at a protest on Parliament Hill Saturday.
A few hundred protesters gathered to voice their displeasure with the federal government's recent announcement that it would endorse the United Nations Global Compact For Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration with other UN member states.
The document is a non-binding agreement that lays out an international approach to migration and has met opposition from conservatives, who claim it would erode Canada's sovereignty.
The Parliamentary Protective Service said eight of the people who were arrested have been released. The PPS turned over one man to the Ottawa Police Service. He has been charged with assaulting a police officer and remains in custody pending a court appearance.
Eye-witnesses said a crowd of 200 to 350 people attended the rally, including representatives of far-right groups.
MP Maxime Bernier, who is the leader of the People's Party of Canada, was rumoured to speak at the rally, but did not show up.
