Smiths Falls businesses — old and new — thriving, despite COVID-19 impacts

By Dani-Elle Dubé

Despite COVID-19 having a devastating impact on many small businesses across Ottawa and the country, Smiths Falls is actually seeing new businesses open in its downtown core.

It’s also been an opportunity for existing small business owners to reinvent themselves and branch out.

“We are fortunate that we are experiencing an economic boom before this all started,” Erin Sporey with the Downtown Smiths Falls BIA said.

Sporey said businesses have adapted to curb side pickup and delivery — and the town has waved patio fees for restaurants.

“This gives them another avenue to have people come downtown. You’ve got the restaurants and they can social distance,” Sporey added.

The latest COVID-19 restrictions may leave some disappointed, but, Sporey said, she is confident Smiths Falls businesses will continue to adapt and thrive.
