Ontario’s education system is getting excellent grades

Students in Ontario are getting a gold star for their efforts.
The 2011 progress report shows that more students in our province are getting better test scores and more are graduating. Not only that, but according to international test scores, Ontario’s education system is one of the top ten in the world.
The report shows that 81 percent of Ontarians are graduating highschool, which is a significant leap from 2004 when only 68 percent graduated.
With a fall election in the cards, the debate over education is heating up. Minister of Education Leona Dombrowksy is already weighing in on the report.
She says the improvements in education are a result of the Liberal’s increased investment in education.
“It means we have more teachers in our classrooms, more resources for students and better places to learn for our children to be successful,” said Dombrowsky.
She said that full-day kindergarten is the key to even better success rates because it allows children to start learning earlier.
Dombrowsky believes a Conservative government will threaten the gains made in education.
“I was a school-board trustee the last time a Conservative government was in power in Ontario. A Conservative government that got to power by promising tax cuts,” she said. “And you know where those tax cuts were funded? Right out of our education!”
The Minister of Education said the Liberals fully intend to implement full-day kindergarten by 2014.
