More young people will be heading to Ontario universities this weekend as the Council of Ontario Universities reports enrollment has hit an all time record high.
It is expected that more than 90,000 university students will be moving into residence or in with roommates across the province this weekend in anticipation of their first year of post secondary education.
Enrollment in university is higher this year than the double co hort year of 2003 when grade 13 came to an end and more than 88,000 students headed for class.
Since then, the numbers have been on the rise every year.
Bonnie Peterson of the Council of Ontario Universities said the increase is being driven by demands of the workplace.
She also said that the higher number of students will need more investment.
Carleton University’s enrollment is up six percent, while the University of Ottawa reports a 4.3 percent jump in students for this fall.
The rise in enrollment also means larger classes and less face time with a professor.
From 2000 to 2007, Ontario universities had the highest ratio of students to faculty in the country which has the Canadian Association of University Teachers suggesting an increase in government funding to maintain quality education.
