A report into Quebec’s measles outbreak may raise some concerns a weekend meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in Boston.
Researchers found about half of the kids who got measles in an outbreak in a Quebec high school had received both recommended doses of measles vaccine in childhood.
It’s generally assumed that two doses, given on the recommended schedule, will protect about 99 per cent of kids.
Dr. Gaston De Serres admits he and his colleagues were shocked to find so many cases among vaccinated teens.
The finding may mean the first dose of vaccine is being given too early, but De Serres says more study will be needed before that can be determined.
Measles has surged in parts of Canada and the United States this year, with most cases occurring among people who have never been vaccinated.
