OTTAWA – The long-awaited Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge began closing in on its final position over the Rideau River, Friday afternoon.
Crews began moving the bridge on Thursday, but it weights over 2,000 tonnes and can only move about five metres in one hour.
“This is a very meticulous and slow process,” says Gloucester-South Nepean Councillor Steve Desroches.
The bridge, which will link River Road and Prince of Wales Drive, was supposed to be finished by 2011, but is now slated to be done by 2013.
The latest delay is due to welding work and a late delivery of the bridge’s arches.
“It’s been frustrating,” admits Desroches. “We all want to see it come to its conclusion, so this is a big milestone.”
Desroches says the bridge’s arches will be in place by the end of the weekend, but it won’t be completed until September 2014.
