TORONTO – “The Orenda” by Scotiabank Giller Prize-winning author Joseph Boyden is the new Canada Reads champ.

Hosted by Jian Ghomeshi, the CBC contest features five books that are championed by celebrity panellists.

“The Orenda” — a historical tale involving Jesuit missionaries and the Huron and Iroquois — was backed by journalist and aboriginal activist, Wab Kinew.

The winning book was announced after four days of debate and voting.

“The Orenda” edged out “Cockroach” by Rawi Hage, which was defended by Samantha Bee of “The Daily Show.”

The other books voted off were: “The Year of the Flood” by Margaret Atwood (defended by Stephen Lewis), “Half-Blood Blues” by Esi Edugyan (defended by Donovan Bailey) and “Annabel” by Kathleen Winter (defended by Sarah Gadon).

Ghomeshi is set to interview Boyden and Kinew on Friday on CBC Radio One.
