The flooding situation along the Ottawa River is seeing signs of slowing down, as water levels are receding and people are starting to gain access to their homes to assess damage.
“I've managed over the course of two days to remove enough [sandbags] to have access again to my garage and front door,” Constance Bay resident Tom Tomkins tells 1310 NEWS.
Tomkins has over 2,000 sandbags surrounding his home that have been helping him keep the water off his property. However, Tomkins doesn't know the extent of damage to his home from this years flooding.
“What I can't tell you yet is if I have any large or small damage to my break wall because it's still buried under 1,500 sandbags,” Tomkins says.
Tomkins added, he's not physically fit enough to remove all the sandbags himself and is waiting for the city to bring back volunteers for the clean up effort.
“The city has done an admiral job,” Tomkisn said. “Even as recent as [Wednesday], heavy equipment just removed a sandbag wall that the army had put in front of the road so now my mail box is accessible by the mailman.”
The city will be brining volunteers on Saturday, June 1, with a bulk of the clean up is expected to take about two weeks.
