2019 flood damage estimated to cost NCC between $6M and $10M

Following this year's record breaking and devastating spring floods, the National Capital Commission is estimating overall damages to cost it somwhere between $6-million and $10-million.

The big chunk of that money is going toward repairs for the Portage Bridge, which are estimated to cost $4-million over two years. Typically, divers conduct hydraulic studies on the bridge at this time of the year, however due to the Ottawa River's current they haven't been able to inspect it.

The NCC is also expecting repairs to the Britannia Burm to cost about $600,000.

The NCC capital pathway's suffered significantly less damage this year, compared to the 2017 flood. Cost estimates for 2019 pathway repairs are around $250,000, compared to $2-million in 2017. The reason for this was because the NCC re-built some of its shoreline after the flooding of 2017.

The CEO of the National Capital Commission Tobi Nussbaum told the board, Thursday, it didn't budget for this type of damage, but has been in discussions with the federal heritage minister to help fund the cost of repairs.
