Doug Thompson registers to run in Osgoode ward

By CityNews Ottawa

A former municipal politician is looking to unseat the man who succeeded him.

Doug Thompson, the former city councillor for the Osgoode ward who was also the town's mayor before amalgamation, has registered to run in Osgoode.

He stepped down in 2014, and Coun. George Darouze has represented the ward since then.

Thompson told The Sam Laprade Show with guest host Derick Fage on Tuesday, August 2 that the main issues he wants to tackle at city hall include the light rail transit (LRT) system, Ottawa's high level of capital debt and ambulance shortages affecting Ottawa paramedics.

“The ambulance issue in the rural areas is criminal,” he said. “There was a lady in Greely that had to wait six hours for an ambulance.”

Thompson said he is able to make a difference in the community given his experience in representing rural areas.

“I'm not a white knight riding in,” he said. “I just feel I can make a difference.”

Darouze, Thompson and Dan O'Brien are the three registered to run in Osgoode.

The municipal election is October 24.
