As Kids return to school, the shortage of school bus drivers may cause some inconsistency in transportation.
Vicky Kyriaco, chief administrative officer for the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA), told The Sam Laprade Show on Tuesday, Sept. 6, that there's been school bus cancellations due to the shortage.
She added that they’ve redesigned routes and transferred some kids to OC Transpo to meet transportation needs, but in the last week, OSTA has had drivers that haven’t come out or are unable to drive due to illnesses.
“There is definitely going to be some inconsistency,” she said. “And that happens every year, even in a non-COVID year, because things change.”
Kyriaco advises parents to wait with their kids until the bus shows up to ensure they get on the correct bus and remain safe.
She added that the new amber light system works like a traffic light giving advanced warning that the bus will stop, increasing safety.
