The capital is experiencing the first major snowfall of the season.
When it's all said and done, Ottawa and parts of eastern Ontario are expected to receive between 15 and 25 centimetres of snow by Saturday, Dec. 17.
Peter Tilley, chief executive officer of The Ottawa Mission, told Wake Up With Rob Snow on Dec. 16 that it's a challenging time for people who are seeking warmth and trying to stay dry from all the snow.
“The people staying at The Mission's shelter aren't worried about cars or driving on the road,” said Tilley. “They will be out walking and they will have damp feet.”
Tilley noted that The Mission has many pairs of dry socks available and there are many campaigns collecting socks and boots that are donated to the organization.
“It's not freezing cold right now, there's just a lot of snow,” he added. “We will take them in from the snow and we will help them keep dry and make sure they are fed.”
Tilley stated that The Mission's shelter is at a full capacity at this time, and has been for a few months.
He said The Ottawa Mission is working with the City of Ottawa for backup plans and providing respite centres for people to stay inside during the colder winter nights.
