Numerous demonstrations planned for Sunday, road closures expected

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) have been made aware of several planned demonstrations set to take place in Ottawa on Sunday, likely between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

OPS say people may experience road closures and traffic disruptions on a temporary basis.

They highlight the following streets and areas of the downtown core:

  • The ByWard Market
  • Wellington Street
  • Metcalfe Street
  • Elgin Street
  • Laurier Avenue

In a release, OPS say they “…continue to work with our municipal and policing partners to ensure public safety.” Residents can expect an increased police.

While Ottawa has seen “hundreds” of peaceful and safe demonstrations, OPS also says, “Freedom of expression has reasonable limits to protect citizens, property and businesses from disruptive or unlawful activities. Threats of violence, property destruction, or other unlawful conduct are not protected under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.”

Ottawa Bylaw wrote on social media that they would take enforcement action to address by-law violations in an effort to address nuisances and safety concerns.

“When we exercise our right to protest, safety is paramount,” they wrote.

Ottawa police warn that using a device to make loud noises in a close proximity, interfering with police and by-law officers in a physical manner, obstructing the flow of traffic and demonstrations using vehicles are all prohibited.

The OPS say they respect “everyone’s right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.”
