Teen caught going double the speed limit in Ottawa Valley

A 19-year-old from Ottawa is facing a serious charge after they were caught going double the speed limit on a road in Laurentian Valley Township.

It happened Aug. 20 at around 7:15 p.m., when an officer from the Upper Valley detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) clocked the young driver going well above the speed limit.

A portion of the usually 80 km/h rural road drops down to 50 km/h, which is where OPP caught the driver going 100 km/h.

The person was charged with driving a motor vehicle while performing a stunt (excessive speed) under the Highway Traffic Act.

They were also issued a court date in Pembroke, had their licence suspended for 30 days and vehicle towed and impounded for 14 days.

Across eastern Ontario police have noticed the number of drivers continuing to speed excessively. One thing police have told CityNews is they are surprised with the number of young stunt drivers being caught, considering the fines and consequences of the charge.

“It’s also surprising given the penalties for stunt racing,” Michael Fathi, Media Relations officer previously said. “You’re fined, you’re paying a reinstatement fee from the Ministry of Ontario to get your license back, you’re paying tow costs and impound fees, and your insurance is going to skyrocket.”
