Carleton Place’s new emergency department opening in the coming weeks

Construction is mostly complete and final approval processes are in place to open the new emergency department at the Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital (CPDMH).

According to a press release from the Mississippi River Health Alliance, the “major milestone” is preparing for clinical operations in the coming weeks. The emergency department will be linked to the hospital. It aims to address the current space challenges and increase infection control standards.

“This is an exciting moment for our community,” Brad Harrington, President and CEO of the Mississippi River Health Alliance. “The new Emergency Department is more than just a building — it’s a reflection of our commitment to providing exceptional care close to home.”

The building is said to be a “transformative” step forward for healthcare in Carleton Place and the surrounding areas. It was designed to meet the needs of patients today while also focusing on the future of the industry.

It will include 11 treatment spaces including specialized rooms for trauma, mental health and pediatric care, an increase of five over the current department.

The planned department has been in the works for years. About $5 million in the first phase of redevelopment was directly from the community’s share of the project to fund the equipment throughout the hospital.

The department originally had a timeline of 18 months to completion — landing at April 2024 — but in the planning process the health alliance “revised” the timeline to reflect its “dedication” to building an upgraded addition.

Plans are underway for a formal grand opening celebration, where the community will be invited to explore the facility.
