911 caller reports flames from basement of Redwood townhome

Firefighters were called early Monday morning to a blaze in the community of Redwood, just off of Greenbank Road in the city’s west end.

Crews were sent to the 2500 block of Draper Avenue at 1:37 a.m. where they found smoke and flames coming from the basement unit of a townhouse. When they arrived, firefighters said there was a “haze” from the roof area and grey and black smoke was polluting the sky. At 1:44 a.m. more teams were dispatched to help with the fast attack on the home.

One crew searched the building, making sure no one was inside, while other teams tackled the blaze by bringing a hose inside. The fire was declared under control at 1:57 a.m.

Firefighters needed to use high-pressurized fans to waft the smoke out of the home. Victim services were dispatched to the scene, along with an Ottawa fire investigator.
