The OPP is advising the public that Highway 17 is closed between Bonfield and Mattawa due to hazardous road conditions caused by severe weather.
Overnight into Sunday morning, southeastern Ontario felt the wrath of a brutal storm as a result of dramatically increasing temperatures. The storm has left many in Ottawa and the surrounding area without power.
The OPP say it received reports of dangerous conditions from several areas around 9:45 p.m. Saturday. As a result, the closure remains in effect as emergency crews work to assess damage, clear debris and assist those affected.
Responders provided coats, blankets, water and batteries to individuals affected by the closure at Champlain Park. The Mattawa Arena remains open as a shelter.
“If you are currently delayed due to road closures or sheltering in place, please remain patient and stay where you are if it is safe to do so,” OPP says. “Emergency responders are working as quickly and safely as possible to reopen routes and provide assistance. Entering restricted areas may delay emergency efforts and put yourself and others at risk.”
Emergency crews were on scene to assist two individuals camping in the northeastern part of Algonquin Park. Police say a tree fell resulting in serious injuries to one person. The individual was transported out of the park by a Ministry of Natural Resources float plan and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Emergency Response Teams, Canine units, fire services and military support from Petawawa have all been deployed to assist with the response.
In the case of an emergency, call 9-1-1. Residents are reminded that non-urgent matters should be reported to the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
