UPDATE: Residents of south Ottawa neighbourhood allowed to return home after gas leak

By CityNews Ottawa

Ottawa Fire Services' Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) team has stopped a large gas leak in the Paul Anka Drive, Uplands Drive and North Bowesville Road neighbourhood.

Crews were called to a leak, involving a large diameter underground gas line, around 2:31 p.m., Thursday. The underground leak was causing the roadway to heave up in the area, and dust was being blown into the air.

Firefighters were going door-to-door to ensure residents had windows closed and they were verifying the air quality inside each building, as well. 16 residents downwind of the leak were evacuated as a precaution.

Others who live in the area were advised to remain indoors with their doors and windows closed and to follow directions of emergency personnel in the area.

Ottawa Fire Services says Enbridge Gas and Ottawa Hydro worked until 12:30 a.m. Friday to repair the leak.

Repair work is ongoing and the gas company says several homes in the area have had their gas service shut off.

An Enbridge gas technician will be in the area Friday, going door-to-door, to notify the affected residents.
