Person charged with careless driving after falling asleep at the wheel

Provincial police are asking people to pay close attention when driving, after a crash that could have been more serious happened on Highway 416.
Officials said they responded to the north-south thoroughfare around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. Police said that a vehicle travelling southbound crossed into the northbound lanes and struck an oncoming vehicle. Both drivers suffered minor injuries, but the front end of the SUV was badly damaged.
The person driving the SUV was asleep at the wheel, officers said. They were charged with careless driving, bringing a $490 fine and six demerit points upon conviction.
“We have seen tires coming off vehicles, ladders falling off trucks, and even pedestrians crossing the highway,” officials said, reminding people there can be many hazards on the roadways.
In the spring, officials laid charges in two incidents involving drivers where the tires of the vehicle flew off.
In early May, they responded to an incident on Highway 417, after a tire came off a vehicle travelling eastbound before it bounced into the westbound lanes, striking another vehicle. The driver who was struck suffered significant injuries. A photo from the scene showed the front windshield of the car severely damaged.
The driver whose tire fell off was charged under the Highway Traffic Act.
