OCDSB releases top priority projects for 2012

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Carleton District School Board has released its list of top priorities for projects for 2012, but not without controversy.
The province told Ontario school boards that as much as $350-million would be available for projects that address overcrowding by creating more space for students, or are undertaken alongside the introduction of full day kindergarten.
The projects that qualify must expect to open for the 2015-2016 school year.
The most contentious item on the OCDSB’s list was the rebuilding of the Broadview Avenue Public School.
The rebuild comes with a proposed $15-million price tag, a decision which some trustees believe was made without due process. But the Broadview rebuild is at the bottom of the 10 item list.
Top priorities include: a request for a new elementary school in Kanata, along with renovations to schools in central Ottawa.
An addition to Mutchmor Public School in the Glebe is estimated to cost another $7 million.
Carleton heights and Devonshire Community Schools are also on the list for potential upgrades.
Permanent additions to Barrhaven’s Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School, Kanata’s South March Public School and Earl of March Secondary School are also on the board’s wishlist.
At the bottom, is a request for a new school in Avalon community of Orleans and the Half Moon Area in Barrhaven, and the Broadview rebuilding project.
Last year the department received $4.5-billion in finding requests of which 14 per cent was actually granted.
