A devastating storm swept through the capital on May 21 leaving thousands of people without power for several days.
The Caldwell Family Centre, an organization that helps reduce the impact of poverty in Ottawa, fortunately did not lose power, and has been helping other food agencies across the capital by delivering meals to those people who are still without power and struggle with food insecurity.
Marilyn Matheson, the executive director of the Caldwell Family Centre, told The Sam Laprade Show on Wednesday, May 25, that representatives of the centre have extra hands in the kitchen, have purchased extra supplies and are sending hot meals to other food organizations across the city who need help and have lost power because of the storm.
“A lot of people who depend on food security outlets don't have the transportation, and when they have lost food because of no power, they can't cook new food,” she said. “We are doing what we can, and it's amazing to see food organizations across the city come together and make sure people are taken care of.”
Matheson noted had the Caldwell Family Centre lost power, other support agencies would have stepped up to lend a helping hand.
“We have to work together,” she added. “Support goes a lot further if we are coordinating together.”
